The Theater in One Car project – a year-long collaboration between Independent Theater Hungary, Basca Theater (Romania), and Mikser (Serbia), co-financed by the European Union – has released a freely available methodology publication documenting the artistic and practical approaches developed throughout the project.
The handbook is structured around four chapters, each a standalone methodology written by the practitioner who led it:
The handbook captures four workshop methodologies for small-scale, ethically grounded, environmentally conscious theater, designed to reach rural and underserved communities across Europe with stories inspired from inside them.
Each chapter blends theory with hands-on exercises — group warm-ups, opinion-line debates, improvisation structures, scene analysis frameworks, and production design checklists. Concrete examples are drawn from existing productions.
The handbook is aimed at independent theater makers, directors, dramaturges, and cultural operators working in or interested in touring, community theater, rural outreach, or socially engaged performance. It is equally useful for arts educators running workshops, and for those producing low-footprint, sustainable tours.
